Isopycnic surface

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006716

A surface within a fluid body, such as the ocean or atmosphere, where the density of the fluid is uniform. These surfaces represent layers of constant density and are often used to analyze fluid motion and mixing processes. In oceanography, potential density is frequently used to define isopycnic surfaces.
