Isopycnal
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010569
A line or surface connecting points of equal or constant density within a fluid medium such as the atmosphere or ocean. Fluid parcels tend to move along isopycnal surfaces, as movement across them requires work against buoyancy forces, making it energetically unfavorable. The spacing of isopycnals indicates the strength of the density gradient, or pycnocline.
