Isopycnal mixing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006713

The process of fluid parcels mixing along surfaces of constant density, where there is no net change in potential energy. This type of mixing is more efficient than diapycnal mixing, which occurs across density surfaces. In the ocean, isopycnal mixing is a dominant mechanism for the redistribution of heat, salt, and tracers.
