Barotropic atmosphere

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003829

An atmospheric condition where surfaces of constant pressure are parallel to surfaces of constant density or temperature. This implies that density is solely a function of pressure, and there are no horizontal temperature gradients on isobaric surfaces. In such an atmosphere, there is no thermal wind, and the wind field does not change with height.
