Barotropic forecast

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003831

A weather prediction derived from numerical models that assume a barotropic atmosphere, meaning that the wind field does not vary with height and there are no horizontal temperature gradients on isobaric surfaces. These models are simpler and computationally less intensive than baroclinic models, primarily forecasting the movement of existing large-scale features. They are generally less accurate for mid-latitude weather systems.
