Barotropic model
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003833
A numerical model based on an idealised barotropic atmosphere, in which density depends on pressure alone and the wind does not change with height, so the flow is treated as two-dimensional. It predicts at a single level, generally 500 hPa, by conserving absolute vorticity, and it cannot represent cyclone growth from conversion of potential to kinetic energy. The first successful computer weather forecast, in 1950, used this type of model.
