Barotropic vorticity equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003835

A simplified form of the vorticity equation that describes the evolution of absolute vorticity in a two-dimensional, incompressible, and inviscid fluid. This equation assumes that density depends only on pressure, meaning there are no horizontal temperature or density gradients. It is often used to model large-scale atmospheric flows where vertical variations are negligible, such as in forecasting the movement of longwaves in the upper troposphere.
