Barotropic

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003828

Describing an atmospheric state where surfaces of constant pressure are parallel to surfaces of constant density or temperature. In this configuration, there are no horizontal temperature gradients on isobaric surfaces, implying an absence of thermal wind and vertical wind shear. Barotropic conditions are often associated with stable, quiescent atmospheric flows.
