Barotropic disturbance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003830

An atmospheric wave or perturbation in which surfaces of constant pressure are parallel to surfaces of constant density, meaning there are no horizontal temperature gradients. In such a disturbance, the wind field does not vary with height, and the flow is essentially two-dimensional. Barotropic disturbances are often associated with the propagation of Rossby waves in the upper atmosphere.
