Short wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008852
A disturbance or trough in the mid-to-upper levels of the troposphere that moves along with the main westerly airflow. These waves are smaller in scale than long waves (Rossby waves) and are embedded within them, propagating faster eastward. Short waves are associated with areas of rising air, cloud development, and precipitation, making them key features for forecasting weather changes over one to three days.
