Equivalent barotropic level

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005452

A specific atmospheric level, often around 500 hPa, where the horizontal wind flow is approximately non-divergent and representative of the vertically averaged flow in a barotropic atmosphere. At this level, the wind direction does not change significantly with height, simplifying the analysis of large-scale atmospheric motions. It is a concept used in simplified atmospheric models.
