Baroclinic

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003804

Describing an atmospheric state where surfaces of constant pressure intersect surfaces of constant density or temperature. This configuration indicates a horizontal temperature gradient on an isobaric surface, which drives thermal wind and vertical wind shear. Baroclinic conditions are prevalent in mid-latitude cyclones and fronts, where significant weather changes occur.
