Baroclinic forecast

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003807

A numerical weather prediction produced by a model that accounts for baroclinicity, the state where surfaces of constant pressure intersect surfaces of constant density. These models solve the primitive equations of atmospheric motion, allowing them to simulate the development of weather systems by converting potential energy into kinetic energy. A baroclinic forecast contrasts with a barotropic forecast, which assumes density is solely a function of pressure and cannot model cyclogenesis.
