Absolute vorticity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003195
A measure of the total rotation of an air parcel in the atmosphere, combining both its rotation relative to the Earth's surface and the rotation of the Earth itself. It is the sum of the relative vorticity and the planetary vorticity (Coriolis parameter). Conservation of absolute vorticity is a key principle in explaining the development and movement of large-scale weather systems, such as cyclones and anticyclones.
