Conservation of vorticity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004607

A principle stating that the absolute vorticity of an air parcel remains constant as it moves, provided there are no sources or sinks of vorticity and the flow is adiabatic and frictionless. This concept is particularly useful for analyzing large-scale atmospheric motions, such as Rossby waves and the development of upper-level troughs and ridges. Potential vorticity is a more generalized form of this conservation law.
