Conservation of momentum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004606
A fundamental physical law stating that the total momentum of a closed system remains constant in the absence of external forces. In atmospheric dynamics, this principle applies to air parcels, where their momentum (mass times velocity) is conserved as they move, subject to forces like pressure gradients, Coriolis, and friction. It is a cornerstone of numerical weather prediction models.
