Conservation of angular momentum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004603
A fundamental physical principle stating that the total angular momentum of a system remains constant if no external torque acts upon it. In the atmosphere, this principle explains phenomena such as the intensification of tropical cyclones as air converges towards the center, causing their rotation rate to increase. It is expressed as the product of moment of inertia and angular velocity.
