Conservation of mass

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004605

A fundamental principle stating that mass cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system. In meteorology, this means that the total mass of air within a given volume remains constant unless there is an inflow or outflow across its boundaries. This principle is expressed mathematically by the continuity equation, which relates changes in density to the divergence of the velocity field.
