Equation of continuity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005408

A fundamental principle in fluid dynamics that expresses the conservation of mass within a fluid flow. It states that the rate of change of mass within a control volume is equal to the net rate of mass flow into the volume. In meteorology, this equation relates the divergence of the velocity field to the local change in air density, often simplified for incompressible flow to state that divergence is zero.
