Hydrologic equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001342

  1. A mathematical expression representing the conservation of water mass within a specific hydrologic system over a given period. It balances inputs such as precipitation and surface inflow with outputs like evaporation, transpiration, surface outflow, and changes in storage. This equation is often applied to watersheds or river basins to quantify water budgets.

  2. In hydrologic terms, the water inventory equation (Inflow = Outflow + Change in Storage) which expresses the basic principle that during a given time
interval the total inflow to an area must equal the total outflow plus the net change in storage.
