Divergence equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005083

A fundamental equation in meteorology that relates the local change in divergence of the wind field to other atmospheric processes. It describes how the expansion or contraction of air parcels influences the vertical motion and pressure tendencies in the atmosphere. This equation is derived from the equations of motion and continuity, and it is used in numerical weather prediction models to diagnose atmospheric dynamics.
