Divergence
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000728
The rate at which a fluid, such as air, spreads out from a given point or region, resulting in a decrease in density or mass within that volume. In meteorology, horizontal divergence in the upper atmosphere is often associated with rising air and the development of low-pressure systems at the surface. It is mathematically represented by the dot product of the del operator and the velocity vector.
The expansion or spreading out of a vector field; usually said of horizontal winds. It is the opposite of convergence. Divergence at upper levels of the atmosphere enhances upward motion, and hence the potential for thunderstorm development (if other factors also are favorable).
