Q vector
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008231
A mathematical construct derived from the quasi-geostrophic equations that indicates regions of atmospheric ascent and descent, and thus the development of synoptic-scale weather systems. It represents the forcing for vertical motion and is proportional to the ageostrophic circulation. The divergence of the Q vector is directly related to the vertical velocity in the atmosphere.
