Wave vector

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010160

A vector that specifies the direction of propagation of a wave and its wavenumber, which is inversely proportional to the wavelength. In atmospheric and oceanic sciences, it describes the spatial characteristics of phenomena like gravity waves, Rossby waves, or ocean surface waves. The magnitude of the wave vector is the wavenumber (2π divided by the wavelength), and its direction is perpendicular to the wave crests, pointing in the direction the wave is moving.
