Zonal wavenumber

A measure of the number of complete waves or cycles that fit around a full circle of latitude. It describes the spatial scale of atmospheric or oceanic disturbances in the east-west direction. A low zonal wavenumber corresponds to large-scale features, while a high wavenumber indicates smaller-scale phenomena.
