Zonal kinetic energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010331
The portion of the kinetic energy of the atmosphere or ocean associated with the mean flow in the east-west (zonal) direction. It represents the energy of the large-scale, zonally averaged motion, distinct from the kinetic energy associated with eddies or transient disturbances. This quantity is a key component in atmospheric energy budgets.
