Zonal wind
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010333
The component of the horizontal wind that blows parallel to lines of latitude, either from west to east or east to west. This east-west motion is a primary driver of global weather patterns, responsible for transporting heat and moisture across longitudes. By meteorological convention, a westerly wind (from the west) is assigned a positive value, while an easterly wind (from the east) is assigned a negative value.
