Meridional wind
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007211
The component of the horizontal wind that blows along a meridian, either northward (a positive value) or southward (a negative value). This north-south motion is a key part of the general circulation of the atmosphere, responsible for transporting heat and moisture between the tropics and the poles. Meridional wind is contrasted with zonal wind, which represents the west-east component of atmospheric flow.
