Meridional circulation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007207
The component of atmospheric or oceanic circulation that involves movement along lines of longitude, primarily in a north-south direction. This circulation is responsible for the poleward transport of heat and moisture, balancing the energy budget of the Earth. The Hadley cell is a prominent example of a meridional circulation pattern in the tropics.
