Meromictic lake
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010611
A lake in which layers of water do not mix due to differences in density, often caused by salinity or temperature gradients. The bottom layer, known as the monimolimnion, remains isolated and anoxic, while the upper layer, the mixolimnion, mixes seasonally. This stratification can lead to unique chemical and biological conditions in the deep waters.
