Lake effect

A meteorological phenomenon where cold air masses passing over warmer lake waters pick up moisture and heat, leading to enhanced precipitation downwind of the lake. This effect is most pronounced in late autumn and early winter when large temperature differences exist. It commonly results in localized heavy snowfall.
