Lake-effect snowstorm
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006847
A localized heavy snowfall event that occurs downwind of large lakes, particularly the Great Lakes, when cold air masses move over warmer lake waters. The temperature difference causes moisture and heat to be picked up by the air, leading to instability, cloud formation, and precipitation. These storms can produce several feet of snow in narrow bands.
