Stratification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009291
The layering of a fluid, such as the atmosphere or ocean, into distinct horizontal strata based on differences in properties like temperature, density, or salinity. This layering inhibits vertical mixing and can significantly influence atmospheric stability and circulation patterns. Stable stratification occurs when density increases with depth.
