Conductivity-temperature-depth profiler

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010441

An oceanographic instrument, abbreviated as CTD, that measures the electrical conductivity, temperature, and pressure (which is converted to depth) of seawater. It is lowered through the water column from a ship or autonomous underwater vehicle to obtain vertical profiles of these properties. The data collected by a CTD are used to calculate salinity and density, providing insights into ocean stratification and circulation patterns.
