Salinity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002392

  1. The total concentration of dissolved salts in a body of water, primarily sodium chloride, but also including other ions like magnesium, calcium, and potassium. This property is a key characteristic of ocean water, influencing its density, stratification, and circulation patterns. Salinity is typically expressed in practical salinity units (psu) or parts per thousand (ppt).

  2. In oceanography, conductivity is measured and converted to salinity by a known functional relationship between the measured electrical conductivity of seawater temperature and pressure.
