The total mass of dissolved inorganic salts present in a given volume or mass of water. This measurement is a key indicator of water quality and is particularly relevant in oceanography for understanding density stratification and marine ecosystems. It is expressed in practical salinity units (PSU) for seawater or parts per thousand (ppt).
