Specific-volume anomaly

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009097

The difference between the specific volume of a parcel of seawater at a given temperature, salinity, and pressure, and the specific volume of seawater at a reference temperature and salinity (typically 0°C and 35 practical salinity units) at the same pressure. This anomaly is used in oceanography to calculate geostrophic currents and understand density-driven circulation. It is expressed in units of cubic meters per kilogram (m³/kg).
