Specific yield
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002578
The volume of water that drains by gravity from a saturated porous medium, such as an aquifer, divided by the total volume of the medium. This value represents the portion of the pore space that can yield water to wells or springs. It is a dimensionless quantity, often expressed as a percentage.
In hydrologic terms, the ratio of the water which will drain freely from the material to the total volume of the aquifer formation. This value will always be
less than the porosity.
