Salt fingering
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008636
A form of double-diffusive convection that occurs in stratified fluids where a warmer, saltier layer overlies a cooler, fresher layer. Due to the differing molecular diffusivities of heat and salt, small, finger-like plumes of fluid form, transporting heat and salt vertically. This process contributes to vertical mixing in the ocean, particularly in subtropical gyres.
