Nansen cast

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007470

A historical oceanographic technique for collecting water samples and measuring temperature at specific depths. A series of Nansen bottles, which are metal cylinders designed to trap water and record temperature, were attached at intervals along a wire and lowered into the ocean. This method has been largely superseded by the use of electronic conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) profilers.
