Messenger
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010616
A weight, typically made of brass or another non-corrosive metal, that is sent down a wire or cable to trigger a sampling or measuring device at a specific depth. When the device, such as a Nansen bottle, reaches the desired depth, the messenger is released from the surface and slides down the line. Its impact activates a mechanism that closes the bottle to collect a water sample and reverses the attached thermometers to record the in-situ temperature.
