Protected thermometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008185
A thermometer shielded from direct solar radiation, precipitation, and thermal radiation from surrounding objects to measure ambient air temperature accurately. The protection is provided by a louvered enclosure, such as a Stevenson screen, which permits free air circulation around the sensor. Unprotected thermometers exposed to direct sunlight will record temperatures significantly higher than the actual air temperature.
