Reversing thermometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008563

A specialized mercury-in-glass thermometer designed to record temperature at a specific depth in the ocean or at a particular altitude in the atmosphere. It works by inverting, which breaks the mercury column and traps the mercury, preserving the temperature reading at the point of inversion. These thermometers are often used in pairs, one protected and one unprotected, to determine depth.
