Sounding weight

A heavy, streamlined lead or brass weight attached to the end of a sounding line or wire used to measure water depth. Its primary function is to keep the line taut and vertical as it is lowered to the seabed, providing an accurate depth reading. Sounding weights are designed with a concave base that can be armed with tallow or wax to retrieve a sample of the bottom sediment.
