Sounding pole

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009060

A graduated rod used for manually measuring the depth of water in a river, lake, or reservoir, or the depth of snowpack. In hydrology, it is lowered vertically into the water until it touches the bottom, and the depth is read from the markings on the pole. For snow surveys, it is pushed through the snowpack to the ground surface to measure total depth, providing a simple and direct measurement for water resource management.
