Sounding balloon

A balloon, typically filled with hydrogen or helium, that carries a radiosonde or other meteorological instruments aloft to measure atmospheric conditions. As the balloon ascends, the instruments transmit data on temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind speed and direction back to a ground station. These balloons can reach altitudes exceeding 30 kilometers before bursting.
