Pilot-balloon station

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007950

A meteorological observation site equipped for conducting pilot-balloon observations to measure upper-air winds. Such a station typically includes a theodolite for tracking the balloon, a supply of balloons and hydrogen or helium for inflation, and personnel trained in observation techniques. These stations contribute to the network of upper-air data collection, particularly in regions where radiosonde launches are not feasible.
