Pinene

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007951

A type of volatile organic compound (VOC), specifically a monoterpene, emitted into the atmosphere by coniferous trees and other vegetation. Pinenes, existing as alpha-pinene and beta-pinene isomers, react with atmospheric oxidants like ozone and hydroxyl radicals. These reactions contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols, which can influence cloud formation and regional air quality.
