Isomer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006707

One of two or more chemical compounds that have the same molecular formula but a different arrangement of atoms in the molecule. In atmospheric chemistry, different isomers of a volatile organic compound can have distinct chemical reactivities, atmospheric lifetimes, and potentials for forming secondary pollutants like ozone and aerosols. For example, n-butane and its isomer isobutane have different rates of reaction with the hydroxyl radical.
