Oxidant
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007765
A chemical compound that readily transfers oxygen atoms or otherwise accepts electrons from another substance in a chemical reaction. In atmospheric chemistry, oxidants are responsible for the chemical transformation of many pollutants, initiating reactions that cleanse the air of certain compounds but also create secondary pollutants. The hydroxyl radical (OH) is the most reactive oxidant in the troposphere, followed by ozone (O3) and the nitrate radical (NO3).
